His ships do not venture into the sea.  Rather, his models of famous ships sit in the drawing rooms even across the seas.

Scaled down models of ships used by Vasco da Gama and Marco Polo and other Chinese and Japanese ships have been fabricated by Narayanankutty, a master carpenter from Thekkupurakkal, Cheruvannoor, Kozhikkode.

He had made these tiny replicas of ancient ships for a TV serial relating to world history.

He had gone into the work after much observation and background study.  He, along with his brother Vinod and assistants went through ancient records and pictures before applying chisel to wood.  To bring about the ambience of forgone centuries, he used artificial colours, coir and bamboo sails etc. to good effect.

Narayanan Kutty learned the art of carpentry from his father Appunni Asan.  His models of Arabian ships sold in large numbers here and abroad.
