At a time when Government employees go on strike for restoration of curtailed benefits, here is an officer who distributes his 1-month salary to the medal-winners of National School Athletics.

V. Gabriel, a Joint Director in Education Department is this model officer.

Gabriel joined the Department as ‘School Sports Organiser’ in 1992.  Later he became Deputy Director and Joint Director.  It was during this period that Kerala put up a splendid performance by winning the National School championship from 1996 to 2002.

It was with the elevation of Gabriel to the helms of school sports that Kerala has improved tremendously, says coach K.P.Thomas of Koruthode.

As Vice President of National School Games Federation, Gabriel could have flown to Patiala for this year’s meet.  At least he could have traveled by air-conditioned coach.  But Gabriel chose to travel with the students in sleeper class.

Even at Patiala, the organizers offered him car and accommodation in a hotel.  Gabriel declined it and chose to stay with the students in a school.  He chose to travel by bus and cycle rickshaw much like his students.  Such sterling leadership would have certainly motivated the students to excel in the championship.

Gabriel belongs to Puthiyathura in Karinkulam Panchayat, Thiruvananthapuram.  He obtained Masters Degree from National Institute of Sports, Bangalore with distinction.  In 1974 he passed football referee test with 100% marks.  He had the first rank in the PSC list for the post of ‘School Sports Organiser’.  He started his official life as a sports teacher at Pallithara School in 1971.
