Advocate G. Narasimhan, a customer of State Bank of Travancore, Salem, Tamil Nadu branch sent his messenger to the bank to deposit an amount of Rs.1,45,000 in his account.  The person gave the pay-in-slip and currency note bundles at the counter and left.

15 minutes later the customer received a telephone call from the bank manager informing that there was an excess of Rs.40,000 in the amount.  The customer had mistaken a bundle of Rs.500 denomination to be Rs.100 denomination.

The staff member who handled the situation was Jayakumar, cashier/clerk.  His honest gesture prompted the advocate to write to the Managing Director of the bank.

“That honesty, integrity and courtesy constitute the basics in the code of conduct of the staff members in the discharge of their duties was demonstrated in an ample measure by the staff of your Salem branch…I compliment the Branch staff for the exemplary conduct and am reporting this memorable experience to be circulated among your staff elsewhere, exhorting them to emulate, if not excel, the conduct of your Salem branch staff.”
