For 50 years now, Vamadevan has been selling court fee stamp and stamp papers at the premises of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, Vanchiyoor, Thiruvananthapuram.  72-year-old Vamadevan, better known as ‘Vender Mamman’ lives at Geetha Nilayam, Kallingal, Kulathur, Kazhakkoottam, Thiruvananthapuram

He is a good reader and has a collection of 1200 different editions of Bhagavad Geetha.

Vendor Mamman’s day begins at 4a.m.  He boards the train from Kazhakkoottam at 5.45 a.m. and reaches Vanchiyoor by daybreak.  He closes shop only after the Magistrate leaves the courtroom.

His only asset, so to say, is an order from the then District Collector in 1959 permitting him to sell stamp paper etc inside the court premises till his death.  The agreement authorizes him to gift the license to anyone after his death.  No wonder he keeps this faded document carefully in his drawer.

During the past 52 years of service at the court, only hartals and bandhs have prevented him from discharging his duty.
