The 1976 national champion in shooting, Sunny Thomas had to retire from competitive sports as he could not obtain leave from his college lecturer’s duty.

But what was a personal setback turned out to be a blessing for the next generation of Indian shooters.  In his role as national coach since 1993, he has been enabling the talent of Indian shooters like Jaspal Rana to bloom in international arena.

Today he is an international jury qualified to officiate at Olympics and World Championships.  And as a fitting tribute to his dedication to the sport, the ‘Dronacharya’ award for the best coaches in India has come his way.

Sunny Thomas was born in Idanad, near Irattupetta.  The family soon shifted to Uzhavoor, the village of former President K.R.Narayanan.  2 years ago he retired as Vice Principal of St.Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor.  His wife, Josamma Sunny, was the head of Botany department in the same college.  His time is now fully devoted his disciples and the National Rifle Association, of which he is the Vice President.

His 2 sons, Manoj and Sunil, were record holders and champions in shooting at the national level.  His daughter, Sonia, is head of computer science at Prajothi Niketan College, Puthukkad.
