Right from childhood, he has been modifying and reinventing devices without any benefit.  And now, 50-year-old T.P.Abdul Razak, an electric mechanic from Kizhisseri in Malappuram has come out with an invention on an automatic day-night, dim-bright lighting system that has received a patent.

Automobiles usually do not have automatic operating system for headlights.  The patented system of Razak utilizes light from the headlight of the opposite vehicle to dim the light.  It also automatically signals an overtaking vehicle.  Also, it switches on in darkness and off in bright light.

While normal systems based on Light Dependent Resistance mechanism will function after getting light from a source, his system works on infrared rays from a device installed in the headlight of the automobile.

The system would not give a false start based on other forms of light like tube lights, mercury lights, neon lights etc.  “The light has a range of 100m to 500m, helping drivers going through ghat roads and tunnels,” he says.

Another feature of the new system is automatic signaling facility.  If fitted to the back of the vehicle, it can automatically beam a signal while overtaking another vehicle.  “Drivers may not bother to signal to other vehicles during night, causing accidents.  My invention will definitely help in curbing accidents,” he says.

Razak, who had devised an electronic gadget linking houses in a neighbourhood to a local police station in the 70s, hopes that some companies will come forward to make the invention beneficial to the public.
