According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the drugs for treatment of hypertension are not effective in 25% of the patients.  The reason for this phenomenon has been the subject of research in many parts of the world.  And the study under the leadership of Dr.Santhosh Padmanabhan of Glasgow University, Britain, has been able to unravel the reason for it.

According to the study, the resistance to drugs is caused by certain genes in Chromosome 2.

The finding, announced at the AHA Conference at Washington on September 23, 2005, was received with due significance by the medical world and journals.  ‘Hypertension’, an American newspaper dealing with the subject reproduced his paper in full.

Even before the findings were announced, he was a noted bio-scientist of European Union.  He represented the Union at the ‘Genomix – Biotechnology’ workshop organized jointly by India and European Union at New Delhi in April 2005.

A doctor from an illustrious family of physicians, his grandfather Malleri Krishnan Vaidyan was a noted Ayurveda practitioner of Mayyazhi.  His father Dr.Valiyakolleri Padmanabhan retired as Deputy Director of the Health Department.

Since their family settled down at Pondichery after his father’s retirement, Dr.Santhosh did his MBBS and MD at the JIPMER Medical College there.  He later went on to obtain MRCP and Ph.D from the Glasgow University.

The 2nd phase of their study to identify the drug-resistant genes is to commence soon with British Heart Foundation (BHF) aid
