In 1985, the students of Orkatteri High School, Vadakara won appreciation from the then President of India, Giani Zail Singh at the national science fair held in Rajasthan after they demonstrated a project for generating electricity from waves.  It was one of the many achievements of of N.K.Gopalan, the Physics teacher who had guided the students then.

Thanks to his efforts, the school has earned a name for itself in Science Fairs, both at State as well as National levels.  He always strives to etch the truths of science in the young minds of his students through innovative ways.  And therefore it is no surprise that the national level best teacher award came his way in 2004.

Gopalan started his career as a clerk in the Educational Office of Kunnummel.  In 1980 he became a teacher and served for 5 months in Government High School, Balussery.  It was after coming to Orkatteri that he could give vent to his desire to fill young minds with wonder and inquisitiveness.  Within 5 years of his coming, other schools started watching the performance of Orkatteri High School in science fairs.  Apart from the State level Melas, he made his presence felt as a ‘teacher guilde’ in the south India level festivals held at Bangalore and Hyderabad.

For many years, he has been the resource person for physics at high school level.  Since 1998 he is involved in the text book revision of SCERT also.
