To a young girl living with her parents and 7 other siblings, there was no need to feel being forsaken.   And yet Thankachi of Kundara, Kollam, used to tell her mother that her ambition in life was to live in an orphanage with abandoned children, sharing love with them…

At 20 years she lost her father, and soon her mother too.  Siblings started marrying and moving out.  And loneliness slowly entered the house.  It was during this time that she got attracted to evangelical activities.  She joined a Vocational Summer Evangelism Course for Women at the Bible Seminary of Dr.K.P.Yohannan at Kuttappuzha.

At the Seminary she met and befriended Asha, a taciturn young woman who used to be carrying a lot of sorrows.  At the time of parting she assured her friend, “If you feel there is no one to help you, you can come to my home.”

After a few months Asha came to her home.  After the death of her parents at a young age, Asha had been exploited by her intoxicated brothers and had lost her mental balance.  Thankachi held out a helping hand and arranged for her treatment at Thiruvananthapuram.

After treatment, when she had nowhere to go, Thankachi hired a house and started living with Asha.  Soon she started admitting more forsaken children.  Now, in the home for such persons at Udayagiri near Sreekariyam, she takes care of 40 other children.  Although her income from evangelical activities is not much, she manages to send the children to S.N.School at Chempazhanthi.

35-year-old Thankachi is contented to be providing love and care to the children.  “To the children who cannot hope for a home to rest their tired bodies, the doors of my home are always open.  And the doors of my heart too”, she says
