He and his students have brought laurels to a general Arts and Science College, which even R&D Institutes would be proud of.  Dr.Mohan Kumar, Professor of Botany at the University College, Thiruvananthapuram and his research students have obtained 3 patents which have a direct bearing on the everyday life of Malayalees.

While the first patent was about enzymes of oil palms, the second was for devising a cure for ‘mandari’ affected coconut tress and the third one was for developing a low cost extractor of oil from palm seeds.  The medicine on ‘mandari’ is likely to be in the market under the trade name ‘Biologic’ quite soon.

His students won the young scientist award at State level in 1997 and 2000.  Dr.Mohan Kumar, who is a socially committed researcher even while discharging his duty as a teacher in a college, has the ability to attract all to his lectures.  Even if other lecturers are condemned to teach a few students in the broad classrooms, his classes are always full.  The students come to listen to his exposition on the frontiers of knowledge.

He has been able to develop the botany lab of the college into one of the most advanced in the State.  “Earlier, during study tours, my students used to be amazed by the facilities at the labs outside the State.  But now they have better facilities available right here.  I consider this the greatest achievement of my 25 years of teaching experience,” he says.

5 doctoral scholars and 3 M.Phil students are doing research under him right now.  6 scholars have already obtained their Ph.Ds.  In an effort to contribute more to the society at large, this teacher is engaged in lifelong study and research.
