For those who dwell in concrete buildings in cities, the organic farming of Joseph on the roof top is a workshop of possibilities.  Joseph, an employee of Public Service Commission, lives in a house set in 3 cents of land at Charachira Road, near Plammood Junction, Thiruvananthapuram.  In the tiny piece of land around the house, he has brought up 3 coconut trees besides cultivating a variety of vegetables and bananas on the rooftop.

According to Joseph and wife Sunitha, they cultivate ¾ of their domestic vegetable requirement from the rooftop.  Besides bananas, one can find drumstick, brinjal, ladies finger, peas etc growing in the rooftop that Joseph got specially made for agriculture.  7 years ago, when the house was constructed, he instructed the engineer to lay a layer of bricks on the terrace.  He then constructed 3 feet high rectangular enclosures for planting vegetables and embarked on the quest for quality vegetables at home.

The husband and wife take turns in the evening to water their farm.  While other housewives search for a place to dispose off foodwaste, Joseph and Sunitha convert them into organic fertilizer needed for their rooftop farm.

Banana cultivation was a recent success for the duo.  Now they look for ward to achieving 100% self-sufficiency in vegetables at home.
