For the past 25 years, she has been serving jaundice patients by providing them a single dose herbal medicine that has been effective in a majority of cases.

K. Parvathi of Nidiyodichal, Padiyoor P.O, Irutti, Kannur had learned the treatment from her father Gopalan Adiyodi, who had started the treatment for jaundice at home 40 years back.  Though she used to handle cases independently even when her father was alive, it was after his death in 1988 that Parvathi became a significant presence in the arena of treatment for jaundice.

Patients from far and wide come to her doorsteps, where the treatment is from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.  The herb, brought from the forest, is ground to extract its juice, which is then mixed with sugar and served to the patients.  After consuming the medicine, the patients vomit once, following which they are asked to rest awhile and then return to their homes.

In majority of cases, one dose of medicine is enough to cure the disease.  However, if the case is critical, a second dose is given 8 days after the first visit.  According to her, more than 2 dozes is very rarely given.

After taking the medicine, patients are advised certain dos and don’ts.  Eat at regular intervals, see that you do not sweat, forgo egg, dried fish, black coffee, black tea, intoxicants etc are some of these.

Without any commercial considerations, Parvathi continues to conduct her simple yet effective treatment as a service to society.  During these 40 years, this modest clinic has cured almost all the patients who have come to its doorstep.  Perhaps it is a measure of the herb’s effectiveness against Hepatitis-B that Dr.Rajan of Thottada, Kannur, a professor in Medical College, refers patients to undergo the treatment of Parvathi.
