Here compassion assumes the form of food.  Few small restaurants in Mumbai, run mostly by Keralites, provides free food for the needy who visit their doorsteps everyday.  The shop run by P.K.Moideen of Tanur, Malappuram at Dongri is one such, where destitutes, beggars and unemployed come for a square meal.

In the city of cut throat competition, such islets of compassion remain as specimens of hope.  The well-to-do donate a portion of their wealth to such establishments to distribute free food to the needy.  Some traders regularly give a portion of their profits to such centres.

According to Moideen, people of various economic strength can stay in Mumbai.  From those who can afford a meal worth thousands of rupees to those who have to make do with a pav-bhaji for Rs.5 to even those who have no money in hand.

“Some who had tasted the hospitality here have gone on to become wealthy.  When they come to Mumbai, many come here and donate one or two thousand rupees”, says Moideen.

Another such hotel is the Shajahan Hotel on Lok Manya Tilak Marg on Craford Market owned by Kunjahammed from Tanur.
