If you consider the volume of output as the yardstick, she may not have done much as an entrepreneur. Yet Elsamma's unit of 16 workers, producing 3000 quality interlocking bricks per day, has recently won the Rashtra Dattan award instituted by the Global Economic Council.

A postgraduate in arts, this former volleyball captain of Calicut University ventured into business based on the wholehearted support from her husband John C.D. Marian. She chose the interlocking brick business considering the increasing demand for these ready to use pavers. Although she had to cross a lot of hurdles while buying land, constructing factory and installing the machinery, she is satisfied that 16 workers, of whom 14 are women, earn their living through the Albin Interlocking Brick Factory. This is excluding many others who are related to the venture indirectly.

"Interlocking bricks are manufactured by mixing brick powder and cement. Although we approached many manufacturers, most of them were reluctant to part with the knowhow. And there was dearth of specialized training in this field. Finally, we learned the methodology of manufacturing, after approaching many a person," says Elsamma.

To receive the award from Andhra Pradesh Governor Bhishma Narayan Singh, she, her husband and 2 children – Amal and Albin – had gone to Hyderabad. Thus this family lady is happy that in addition to the recognition, the occasion afforded a pleasure trip for the whole family.
