Call it art using hay or straw-strewn pictures, the creations of Rajendran, Thannimukku, Perinad, Kollam arrest one's attention with its fineness of expression.

Rajendran makes pictures using thousands of bits of hay. His steadfast effort is able to bestow even facial expressions to the figures created in hay. The Central Ministry of Textiles had given national award for such works of art in 1996. It was given to a work titled 'Tathagathan', made using 1 million straw pieces.

Rajendran's straw picture exhibition has began in the Khadi Bhavan near Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram. His technique involves moving a razor blade over the straw bits. Discarding the traditional media of water colour and oil paintings, Rajendran has made his foray into the bit by bit integration of artistic work. 20 'pictures' are on display at the exhibition.

The picture depicting Gandhiji, Nehru and other national leaders was made using 4 lakhs straw bits and 38 mandays.
