Land surrounded by water – and yet Kuttanad suffers from lack of drinking water.  Come Kuttanad Vikasana Samithi with its rain water harvesting programme that people can benefit and draw inspiration from.

The Samithi, with Fr.Thomas Peeliyanikkal as Executive Director, has already constructed more than 200 Ferro cement rainwater harvesting structures in the region.  With a choice of 5000 litre or 10000 litre capacity, the average cost of the structure per litre works out to Rs.1.15 to 1.4.  While the beneficiaries are expected to contribute 25% of the expenses, the Samithi meets the rest.

The Samithi, under the Malanad Development Society of Kanjirappally, is funded by Indo-Canada Environment Facility.  Besides, it is aided by ‘Capart’, an agency under Ministry of Rural Development at the Centre.  With the aid of ‘Capart’, the Samithi has already constructed over 20 rain water harvesting structures in Kainakari Panchayat without taking beneficiaries’ contribution.

The assistance for rain water harvesting structures is given through Self Help Groups under the Samithi.
