His field is the vast cosmos and theories of its origin.  Justifiably he is known in the wide world of astrophysicists and scientists of the sky.  But Prof. Thanu Padmanabhan, Dean at Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Pune may not be well known among Malayalees back home.

Recently he has been honoured with the Birla award,  the Rs.1.5 lakh award given to outstanding scientists below the age of 50.  Dr. Padmanabhan has made significant contributions in the fields of origin of the universe, its evolution, gravitation, quantum physics etc.  His book, “After the 1st 3 minutes”, on the origin of the universe is a quite well known.

Born at Thiruvananthapuram in 1957, Dr. Padmanabhan did his M.Sc at Kerala University and later completed his Ph.D under the guidance of Dr.Jayant Narlikar from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.  He then did post doctoral work at Cambridge University and has acted as visiting professor at many foreign universities.

Other honours that have come his way include Young Scientist award (1984) of Indian National Science Academy, Gravity Esse award of the Gravity Research Foundation, USA and the Santhi Swarup Bhatnagar award (1997).
