For someone who does not submit his works for any awards, the visit from representatives of Guiness Book must have been a surprise.  V.Balakrishnan, 74, has created a world record by authoring 293 books.

And a pass in Intermediate Exam and Hindi Vidwan are the only academic credentials of the prolific author, who has written 34 novels and 67 children’s books among other things.

In 1967 he edited the 1st Malayalam encyclopedia brought out by Vidyarthi Mitram.  Among his other works include complete translation of Vedas into Malayalam, translation of Upanishads, Puranas and texts of Indian Philosophy.  In all he wrote 61 books based on classics like Mahabharatha, Puranas, Ramayana and Bhagavad Geetha.  His books based on Holy Quran number 16 and one of them was the Islamic Encyclopedia published by DC Books.

Balakrishnan could not complete his college education and had to drop out as he was in the thick of freedom struggle in 1946.  Later he learned Hindi and read the classics of English and World Literature.  In the meanwhile he got appointed as a teacher in Government School, Pala.  It was during this time that he showed some of his works to noted litterateur, N.V.Krishna Warrior.  Warrior saw through the destiny of Balakrishnan and commented that he was a better writer than a teacher.

Forthwith Balakrishan resigned from the school and became a full time writer.  He married Leela Devi, whom he had met during his teaching days.  He acknowledges that it was the inspiration of Krishna Warrior and the presence of his wife that made him spend his energy in the world of letters.  Till his wife’s death in 1998, they wrote the books together.

His lifelong ambition of ‘Hindu Encyclopedia’ is to be published by Arshasree Books, Thiruvananthapuram within a few days.
