Sivasankara Kaimal, who retires after 3 decades of service as coach at the Calicut University prefers to call himself a servant rather than a coach.  For he who was the guru, friend and guardian to the athletes was mainly responsible for converting Calicut University from an also-ran team to the champions 18 times after he took over in 1970.

And after the system of determining the Champion University was changed in 1994, he had the sweet credit of leading the team to overall championship in 4 out of 8 times.  And in the last inter-university meet held at Gulbarga too, his team returned with the overall championship – a fitting retirement gift for their coach by the students.

His deviation from orthodox coaching had made some apprehensive, but when he started producing results, all had to recognize his contribution.  He is strongly against over-practice and the mad rush after western style of coaching.

Even at this age of 60, he is ready to shoulder responsibilities. Kaimal, who had worked in Indian Navy for 10 years, had worked 1 year under Sports Council before becoming the University coach.  His wife, Santhakumari, is an Assistant Registrar in the University.  They have 2 children.
