It was her brother’s operation for cancer that brought Ambika Chandran face to face with sterilization or the lack of it in many hospitals.  Later, when she and her husband A.K.Chandrasekhar quit their cozy jobs in the Gulf to start the venture, Sterimade, they had a mission – to provide sterilized environment for operation theatres.

Her 7 years of work in this field has made her aware of a fatal ignorance / negligence about this fundamental requirement among managements.

The traditional method adopted by the hospitals was to load the patient with a heap of antibiotics.  Sterimade sterilization monitoring system, which barely costs Rs.2 to Rs.50, can give an instantaneous result whether an instrument is sterilized or not.  The pack, which contains yellow lines, will turn blue on successful sterilization.  It will also indicate the Department, Date and Machine used for sterilization and will be a permanent record for future legal use.  For different purposes, they provide different indicator tubes and control tubes.

The company, which is ISO 11140 certified, has won many awards for their work.  These include Indian Economic Research Forum award, World Economic Program Society award, National Industrial Excellence award and National Achievement award etc.

Ambika recalls how some hospitals, which refused to spend a few rupees for sterilization monitoring when she approached them, had to come searching for her when the patients who suffered infection after operation moved for legal remedy.  Even then she did not feel any sense of success but a tinge of sadness that a life had to be sacrificed to gain acceptance for even a simple system.
