With no formal training in textile and fashion designing, Thankam Mathai has been designing sarees for about 2 decades now.  And her small boutique, Mayuri, which she began 14 years ago in a portion of her house, has since grown into an establishment with separate weaving, printing and embroidery units employing 60.

A native of Kollam, she took up sari designing long after marriage, when she moved to Chennai.  Exquisite prints, cut work and embroidery on fabrics make each of her sarees a beautiful work of art.

She regularly visits Kerala and conducts exhibition of her sarees here.  “Now with salwars becoming the choice of many, every time I panic if my sarees would sell.  But when I come here, I see the same sort of demand for my sarees,” she says.

She conducts regular exhibitions at Kochi, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad and has been traveling to Dubai, Australia, Malaysia, Colombo and even London.

“Many students from fashion technology schools and textile designing schools come to Mayuri to watch me work.  I consider all success as God’s grace,” says a modest Thankam.
