Green Life, a charitable trust organized by a few bank and railway employees, run the special school Jyotis for chidren affected with cerebral palsy at Kottayam.

In India, it is estimated that 1 child in every 300 suffers from cerebral palsy.  And in Kerala there are at present 3 institutes to cater to such children.  Jyotis is one of them.

The school has 10 students in the age group 3 to 10 years.  And each child is given specialized training according to his or her condition.  Each student has different set of seat, toys and study materials.

According to the mothers, the awareness that there are more children like them is the most soothing thing for the special students.  The mothers are present with their children in the school functioning in a rented building.  And 2 mothers resigned their jobs to be with their children in the school.

While cerebral palsy can occur due to post natal damage to the nerves, the treatment consists of reducing the dependency of the children on others.  With physiotherapy, occupational therapy and specialized training, this is aimed at.

Jyotis is lighting a lamp of hope in the eyes of the few who are staggering to raise themselves up.
