3 teashops of Kuryathy, Aryanad are becoming the toast of the neighbourhood.  For these shops charge more or less the same rates for tea and other snacks which they were charging 5 years ago.

While Gireesan and family, Akhila Bhavan, E.M.S.Nagar, run one of them, the second shop is run by Prabhakaran, Sreenilayam and the third by Karunakaran Nair, Saji Vilasom, Vaikkekkonam, Panaykode.

Once 3 government employees came for duty at Kuryathy in connection with a by-election.  After having their fill at one of these shops, when the three reached the cash counter they were in for a surprise.  On hearing the unimaginably low price they asked twice to make sure there was no mistake.  It was then that the owner responded: “This is the tradition of Kuryathy.  Here you can get a dosa for 50 paise and have a sumptuous breakfast for less than Rs.10.”

Using part of the house as a teashop and not employing external labour to run the shop are the reasons they are able to offer pocket-friendly menu.

Among the 3, Karunakaran Nair has been running the shop for the last 13 years.  Since his shop is in a rented room, he has to struggle a bit to run the business.  Still he is able to give matching offers to the rupee-conscious customers by doing all the works at the shop himself.  That includes preparation and serving.

His present sorrow is the plight of his only son who has been bed ridden after an automobile accident.  The treatment of the son, who was a driver, has already cost him almost Rs.1 lakh.

“I have to take care of everything by running this shop,” he says.
