Value addition to humble coconut pith!  By spreading coconut pith on concrete terrace, D.D.Scaria and a few of his neighbours have banished the summer heat from the interior of their houses.

Resident of Nehru Nagar, Kuriyachira, Thrissur, Scaria decided to experiment with the odourless and valueless pith after hearing about its heat insulating property from someone.  Within 10 hours after spreading the pith in 1inch layer on the terrace, the temperature of the rooms below it dropped appreciably.  As he switched on the fan, the hot air escaped, leaving the room cool and comfortable.

Since there is moisture content in the pith there is no need to sprinkle water either.  “Earlier, it was difficult to even step into the rooms at noon.  Now there is no such problem”, enthuses Scaria, a marketing executive with a pharmaceutical company.

Based on his testimony, a few neighbours and a few doctors decided to experiment with the pith.  All of them had satisfactory experience and some with air conditioners even had had their electricity bills slashed.

Since the coconut pith is not commercially marketed, it is available free from coir manufacturing units.  Another advantage is the lack of odour for the product.  And at the end of summer, the pith can be packed in gunny bags and kept safely for use during the next season.
