His effort may not solve the burning problem of hunger in the world; but the feat of Heera Rathan Manek in proving to NASA than he can be perfectly healthy without food for months together, may have implications in space travel by astronauts in future.

66-year-old Heerachand, a Gujarati settled in Kozhikode, has experimented with his body’s ability to absorb energy directly from the sun using his eyes.  For the last 8 years he has not taken any solid food.  He takes tea, coffee or buttermilk only to satisfy his hosts but otherwise is most comfortable with plain water.

In 1995 he lived on water in US for 211 days under the observation of experts and doctors.  Again in 2000 he lived similarly for 411 days; and later for NASA he repeated the feat for 130 days.  And now he is again proceeding to US based on an invitation by NASA.

A mechanical engineer, Heerachand says that his food is the daily routine of looking at the sun barefoot for 1 hour in the evening.  By following the Jain tradition of fasting, he was proving that man could live with water alone.

The difficulty in carrying food to space and eating it is what prompted NASA to verify the claim of Heerachand.  He is again proceeding to USA to undergo further investigation at NASA.

According to him, man utilizes only about 5% of the capacity of the brain.  The key to unlock the power of the brain is sunlight, which can enter the brain through eyes.  NASA has already accepted his observation that eventide is the right time to look at the sun as the concentration of ultra violet rays in the sunlight at that time would be only less than 2%.
