The story of Dr. G.Gireesh Chandra Varma, the only Malayali heart surgeon of Mumbai, is a saga of hard work and steely resolve.  Varma, who is a leading cardio vascular surgeon in India is at present working at the Hinduja National Hospital there.

Gireesh Varma, Sreerangam Lane, Sasthamangalam, Thiruvananthapuram, took MBBS from Davangare in Karnataka in 1982.  Later he worked for a brief while with the famous Dr.K.M.Cherian of Chennai.  But an innate urge to aquire higher qualifications made him board the train to Mumbai.  There, based on the advice of cardiac surgeon Dr.K.R.Shetty, he did his MS at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore.

Though friends and well wishers advised him to go back to Kerala, he stuck on in Mumbai.  And reward for his hard work and dedication came in the shape of Dr. Bhattacharya, a world famous coronary bypass surgeon.  He became assistant to Dr. Bhattacharya and learned the intricacies of cardiac surgery.

He soon climbed the steps of vidya with dedication. Fellowship from University of Alabama at Birmingham, known as the Mecca of cardiac surgery, allowed him to work with world famous surgeons there.  Then after a brief stint in Belgium he went on to Paris where he obtained a diploma in cardiac surgery.

In 1994 he married senior lecturer in Anaesthetiology, Dr. Aruna Varma.  Though a lucrative offer from England came his way, the family returned to Mumbai, considering the upbringing of their son Adithya.

A inspiration and a doctor in need for the Malayalees of Mumbai, his help can be sought even in the middle of the night.
