The new curriculum of 8th standard student Soorya of Bethlehem School, Mukkattukara had demanded that she do some budding and planting work.  With the keen observation that the syllabus thus encouraged, she started a cultivation of paddy in front of her house. And when the same is now ready for harvest, she cannot hide her joy!

12-year-old Soorya’s cultivation had a modest beginning when she plucked stray sapling of paddy found on the roadside and transplanted it in front of her house.  Later, as her interest waxed, she prepared the plot in front of the house with her grandmother’s help.  Seeds were obtained from a neighbour and her cultivation was truly launched.  She tendered it with water and manure.

After 3 months the grains have ripened and are ready for harvesting, which is scheduled a few days hence.  Tiles have been kept around the field like a fence to deter rats.

Another daily activity of hers is providing water to visiting birds in coconut shells hung from trees for the purpose.  Soorya’s father is an employee of Kitko Consulting Agency and her mother Devayani is a Kudumbasree worker.
