10th standard student Christo George gathered money for buying a moped by working part time in his father’s saw mill and by dealing in fancy fishes.  But since he hadn’t come of age, his father prohibited him from taking the moped outside the house.  During this time, his father’s business suffered a set back and he was forced to sell off his car among other things.  For a long time the father had to make do with the moped bought by his son.

That was a practical lesson on the ups and downs of life for Christo George.  After completing his B.Tech in Electronics and Communication from V.L.B.Janaki Ammal College, he further developed his student project on invertors.

With 5 employees and Rs.50000 as capital, in 1991 he started the production of a water level controller in a rented house.  He remembers many occasions when he had to go alone to market the product.  In the same year, the company started production of invertors.

In 1997 he started ‘Hycon Power Electronics’ with his wife Catherine as head to produce more durable items.  As part of diversification and consolidation he started Hycon Transcripts in medical transcription field.  To cater to the increased demand for products, he started a new production unit at Kuttanalloor, Thrissur in 2000.

In the meanwhile, as part of the effort to tap solar energy, the company entered the market for solar driers, water heaters etc.  Among the 7 companies under the group, 3 are ISO certified.  With staff strength of 350 and an expected annual turnover of Rs.15 crores, the group, led by 36-year-old George has certainly come of age.

Rashtreeya Rattan award, Kamal Patra award, national productivity award for small industries, state productivity award etc. are some of the honours that have come his way.
