M.P.Kurian and his wife Leela Kurien may be issueless, but the orphans in the Y.M.C.A Boys’ Home, Ernakulam can certainly make good the loss.  And as the Boys’ Home shifts from the rented house at Palarivattom to the newly constructed building at the 4-acre land at Thrikkakkara, they can legitimately feel fulfillment at the achievement.  For the couple contributed half the amount towards construction of the Rs.25 lakhs home.

Kurien came in close contact with the orphanage during 1962-95 when he was at the helm of affairs at Y.M.C.A. At least once a month he used to visit the orphanage and the nearby home for mentally challenged.  During the last 13 years, the couple have been celebrating their birthdays in the midst of this extended family.  Lunch and a new pair of dress are the gifts to the 40 odd inmates on such occasions.

The newly constructed 2 story building has good facilities for the inmates: tiled floor, individual coats, foam mattresses, study table for each boy, tiled pantry, bathroom, toilet etc.  An M.Tech in Civil Engineering, and a practicing builder, he had felt that the boys staying there need such facilities.  He has noticed that not all boys are progressing academically.  For that also he has plans: to construct a couple of study rooms on top of the new building and arrange tuition teacher to guide the students.

In the sports arena also Kurien has contributed to capacity-building.  He was Chairman of the football club, F.C.Cochin and a patron of Kerala State Basket Ball Association.
