Plastic surgery, to many, was a tool to enhance the beauty of the well to do.  But to Dr.Rajappan, Director of Specialist’s Hospital, Ernakulam it had a much larger role, which he recognized even while serving in the Government department.  He took steps to bring the benefit of his knowledge to the leprosy patients, congenitally deformed persons and patients with burn injuries etc.

Dr. Rajappan who did his medical studies in Kerala, Orissa and Bihar, joined as tutor at Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.  Later he took over as head of plastic surgery at Medical College, Kottayam.

With the help of voluntary and non-governmental organizations, he was able to spot and treat the hapless patients who needed the benefit of plastic surgery.  He conducted medical camps at various places for this purpose.

He was a doctor in search of patients.  In 1975 he resigned from Government service to devote more time to social work.  With the help of kind-hearted persons he was able to bring dignity and solace to many a deformed face belonging to the economically weak.

And now as the head of plastic surgery at the Specialist’s Hospital he is engaged in more Herculean task.  Together with the micro vascular surgeon, he performs marathon surgeries of up to 12 hours duration to have the severed part joined to the  body again.

The gratitude on the face of the patients as they bid farewell is the most cherished reward for Dr. Rajappan
